Is it Safe for Dogs to Eat Kiwi?

Kiwis are sweet fruits that are delicious and give an abundance of nutritional advantages. One kiwi has more vitamin C than an orange and more potassium than a banana. Kiwis are available throughout the year and have a wide variety of availability. But, Is kiwi safe for dogs to eat? It is not a problem in the least if you give some of the kiwi that you are nibbling on to your dog. Before you go ahead and accomplish that, there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Is Kiwi Good for Dogs?

You should never give your dog a whole kiwi because of the fruit’s relatively tiny size. While smaller dog varieties, like the Havanese, won’t be able to fit a whole kiwi into their jaws, bigger dog breeds, like the Golden Retriever, could be able to finish it off in in one chomp. If this occurs, the fruit might get caught in your dog’s throat, which would prevent him from breathing normally. To prevent your dog from getting into a potentially dangerous scenario, you should slice the kiwi fruit into little pieces and only give him a very limited amount at a time.

Always start slowly when introducing anything new to your dog, but particularly food from people, so you can gauge how they will respond. According to Dr. Ann Hohenhaus, a staff doctor at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, “some dogs really can’t stomach anything other than their own chow.” Dogs have undergone evolutionary changes that have made them better able to consume the things that humans do; yet, not all canines are able to easily digest the treats that we like to give them.

The thick, outer peel of kiwis, in addition to the fruit’s meat, has a high concentration of insoluble fiber. This kind of fiber is more frequently referred to as “roughage.” This excites the intestines, which speeds up the movement of food through the digestive tract. A dog’s digestive system may get irritated or they may have severe diarrhea if they consume a diet that is high in fiber. Even though the skin may be consumed, it is recommended that it be removed prior to giving kiwi to a pet dog or cat.

If you’re curious about whether or not your dog will enjoy the same range of positive health effects that you do as a result of eating kiwi fruit, the answer is no. According to Dr. Hohenhaus, “people and dogs do not have the same dietary needs,” thus it is important to feed your dog appropriately. This is not to imply that giving your dog a kiwi is not beneficial, but the health benefits of this fruit are greater for people than they are for dogs.

The consumption of kiwi by your dog need to be seen as a kind of reward rather than as an alternative to the provision of meals that are more nutrient-dense for puppies. Before introducing any new item or food to your dog, you should always check with your veterinarian first.
